A view of Half Dome in Yosemite Valley during fall

Road Trip Itinerary Fall in Yosemite

Scenic Drives, Golden Meadows & Starry Nights

You don’t have to drive hundreds of miles to feel worlds away. Once you’re here at Tenaya, Yosemite itself becomes the ultimate fall road trip. Pack a thermos, zip up your jacket, and set out to explore scenic overlooks, golden meadows, and hidden roadside gems at your own pace. With fewer crowds and cooler temps, autumn is the season Yosemite feels most like yours.

A view of Half Dome in Yosemite Valley from Glacier Point

Day 1: Glacier Point ROad – Golden Hour Above It All

In fall, these iconic overlooks feel quieter, more intimate — like nature set the stage just for you.

  • Morning Start: Just a short drive from Tenaya, Glacier Point Road delivers some of the park’s most jaw-dropping vistas.
  • Afternoon Stroll to Taft Point: A mellow 2.2-mile roundtrip hike where you’ll find sweeping valley views framed by fiery red dogwoods and golden aspens. Perfect for couples who want that “wow” factor without an all-day trek.
  • Glacier Point Overlook: Continue the drive to Glacier Point. Half Dome rises in full view, and in autumn the air feels sharper, the light warmer. Park your car, grab your camera, and bring a thermos of hot cider — it’s a view you’ll want to linger over.
  • Early Evening Return to Tenaya: Wrap up the day with dinner at Jackalope’s Bar & Grill, where hearty comfort food and local brews hit the spot after a crisp fall drive. Then slip into the hot tub under the stars, or sip a glass of wine by the firepits, letting the mountain air do the rest.

Day 2: Yosemite Valley – Meadow Hopping & Timeless Views

Keep the phones stowed and listen to leaves crunching underfoot. These vistas and meadows are fall magic.

  • Morning Tunnel View: Start with the classic. El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome line up in a postcard-perfect frame. In fall, the valley below glows in warm tones of gold.
  • Bridalveil Fall Pit Stop: A quick, easy stroll brings you to the base of this iconic waterfall, framed by vibrant autumn colors.
  • El Capitan Meadow: Watch for climbers scaling the granite giant while leaves crunch beneath your boots.
  • Ahwahnee Meadow: Wide open and calm, it’s the perfect picnic spot.
  • Sweet Stop at The Ahwahnee Hotel: Treat yourselves at the Sweet Shop inside the historic hotel. Fudge, cookies, or local favorite Reimer’s truffles make for a cozy road snack.
  • Valley View at Sunset: On your way out, pull over at this riverside vista for a quieter, crowd-free view of El Capitan and Cathedral Rocks glowing in the day’s last light.
Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park

Day 3: Tioga Pass Adventure – Alpine Lakes & Crisp Mountain Air

The Tioga Pass is a must-drive fall route open typically late May through mid-October, depending on snowfall. Minimal services are available on this drive, but that’s part of the charm. It’s just you, your picnic, and the alpine air.

  • Olmsted Point: Granite domes roll into the distance here. This is a quieter, more dramatic view of Half Dome than you’ll see elsewhere.
  • Picnic Stop Tenaya Lake: Pack a cozy blanket and a picnic (or even your own paddleboard!) for a stop lakeside. In fall, the shoreline glows and the water reflects the crisp blue sky.
  • Tuolumne Meadows: Golden grasses wave in the breeze as the Sierra peaks stand sun-kissed in the distance. A short stroll to Twin Bridges along the Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne River (3 miles round-trip) offers quiet beauty with low effort.
  • Evening Return: As you wind back down toward Tenaya, watch the landscape shift from granite domes to forested valleys, a moving reminder of Yosemite’s incredible variety.
