Fall Road Trip: In-Park Highlights
Scenic drives, golden meadows & starry nights
Once you’re here at Tenaya, Yosemite itself becomes the ultimate fall road trip. Pack a thermos, zip up your jacket, and set out to explore scenic overlooks, golden meadows, and hidden roadside gems at your own pace. With fewer crowds and cooler temps, autumn is the season Yosemite feels most like yours.
Set aside one day to follow the winding road to Glacier Point, where sweeping views stretch across Half Dome and Yosemite Valley. On another, head out along Tioga Road into the high country, drifting through Tuolumne Meadows. These routes are only accessible for a short window each year before winter snow closes them to vehicles, making fall the perfect time to experience them in full.
Day 1: Glacier Point Road — Yosemite from Above
In fall, these expansive overlooks feel quieter and more intimate — like nature set the stage just for you.
-
Morning: Jaw-Dropping Vistas
- Start the day with a hike to Sentinel Dome, where a short, steep climb leads you to a bald granite summit with 360-degree views. Here, you’ll find yourself standing nearly eye-level with Half Dome and on a clear day, you can spot the Sierra crest stretching endlessly in the distance. Valley views are framed by fiery red dogwoods and golden aspens, making this 2.2-mile trek perfect for that “wow” factor without an all-day commitment.
-
Afternoon: Glacier Point Overlook
- Continue the drive to Glacier Point. Half Dome rises in full view, and in autumn the air feels sharper, the light warmer. Park your car, grab your camera and bring a thermos of hot cider — it’s a view you’ll want to linger over.
-
Evening: Look Up and Savor
- Wrap up the day with dinner at Jackalope’s Bar & Grill, where hearty comfort food and local brews hit the spot after a crisp fall drive. Then slip into the hot tub or sip a glass of wine by the fire pits, letting the mountain air do the rest.
- Want to end on a cosmic note? Book a guided Sierra Stargazing experience and step into one of the darkest skies in California. Far from city lights, the night opens up—constellations sharpen, the Milky Way stretches overhead, and planets come into focus through high-powered telescopes. Your guide brings it all into perspective, weaving together astronomy, storytelling, and the stillness of the Sierra at night.
Day 2: Yosemite valley — Meadow hopping & timeless views
Keep the phones stowed and listen to leaves crunching underfoot. These vistas and meadows are fall magic.
-
Morning: Coffee with the Classics
- Start with the quintessential Yosemite vista: Tunnel View. El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome line up in a postcard-perfect frame. In fall, the valley below glows in warm tones of gold.
- Take a pit stop at Bridalveil Fall on your way into the Valley. An easy stroll brings you to the base of this iconic idyllic waterfall, framed by vibrant autumn colors.
-
Afternoon: Meadow Meandering and Sweet Stops
- Wide open and calm, this quiet stretch of Valley floor invites you to slow down and take it all in. With uninterrupted views of Yosemite Falls and Half Dome, it’s a stop that feels both expansive and tucked away. For a proper picnic setup, head just nearby to Church Bowl Picnic Area, where shaded tables along the Merced River offer a peaceful place to pause.
- Step inside the historic Ahwahnee and make your way to the Sweet Shop for a well-earned treat. Rich fudge, fresh-baked cookies, and local favorite Reimer’s truffles line the shelves — easy to pack up and take with you for the road.
-
Evening: Sunset on the Beach
- On your way out of the Valley, stop at the sandy beach just behind Yosemite Valley Lodge, where the Merced River slows and the crowds thin. Sentinel Rock rises in the background, catching the last warm light of the day while the river reflects the shifting sky. It’s a quiet, unhurried place to pause — an easy, beautiful way to close out your time in Yosemite.
Day 3: Tioga Pass — Alpine Lakes & Crisp Mountain Air
The Tioga Pass is a must-drive fall route open typically late May through mid-October, depending on snowfall. Minimal services are available on this drive, but that’s part of the charm — be sure to fuel up and come prepared with the essentials.
-
Morning: Slow Ascent
- Begin the climb along Tioga Road, gradually leaving the Valley behind as the landscape opens into the high country. One of the first vistas you’ll encounter is Olmsted Point, where sweeping granite domes stretch into the distance and the landscape opens wide. From here, Half Dome reveals a more angular, less-seen profile — set against the vastness of the high country.
-
Afternoon: Picnic with a View & River Strolls
- Pack a cozy blanket and a picnic (or even your own paddleboard!) for an afternoon at Tenaya Lake. In fall, the shoreline glows and the water reflects the crisp blue sky.
- Continue your journey to Tuolumne Meadows, where golden grasses wave in the breeze as the Sierra peaks stand sun-kissed in the distance. A short stroll to Twin Bridges along the Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne River (3 miles round-trip) offers quiet beauty with low effort.
