Winter One-Day Itinerary

Ice, pines and endless possibility

Yosemite in winter feels like stepping into a quieter world. This one‑day itinerary is designed for travelers who want to experience the season’s calming beauty in a meaningful way, blending invigorating winter exploration with the comfort and warmth waiting for you back at Tenaya.

Morning: Snowshoe the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias

    Snow-dusted Giants

Just minutes from Tenaya lies the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, a serene winter landscape filled with quiet wonder. Rent snowshoes (included in your stay at Tenaya) and explore the Big Trees Loop Trail, where 500 ancient sequoias tower overhead.

Pause beneath the Grizzly Giant, then continue toward the California Tunnel Tree — a natural cathedral carved by time. As the morning light filters through the snowy branches, it’s easy to feel like you’ve stepped into another world. Pack a thermos of coffee or cocoa from Parkside Deli before you head out!

Afternoon, Part 1: Winter wonders in Yosemite Valley

    Winter Stillness

After your hike, take the scenic drive north through Yosemite’s South Entrance toward Yosemite Valley. Along the way, stop at Tunnel View where El Capitan and Half Dome rise above snow-covered pines. It’s one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the park.

In the valley, explore Yosemite’s quieter winter beauty: Yosemite Falls, shimmering with mist and framed in ice; El Capitan Meadow, for watching clouds move across granite cliffs; and Valley View, where the Merced River mirrors snow-dusted peaks.

Afternoon, Part 2: The Ahwahnee Hotel

    Parkitecture Marvels

When hunger calls, make your way to The Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite’s most historic lodge. Settle into the grand dining room beneath soaring timber beams and massive stone fireplaces for a warm, elegant lunch amidst national-park history. In winter, the fire crackles, the windows glow with snowy light and the ambiance feels timeless.

After lunch, take a moment to wander the public spaces of The Ahwahnee. This building is a masterpiece of “Parkitecture,” with its rough-cut granite and concrete exterior blending into the valley’s natural cliffs. The art and textiles throughout the interior — especially in the Great Lounge and Mural Room (featuring a mural by Robert Boardman Howard depicting the park’s native flora and wildlife) — invite you to look deeper and appreciate Yosemite’s cultural heritage.

Evening: Ice skating and fireside comfort

    Fireside Nights

After a day of exploring, head back to Tenaya for some well-earned relaxation. Warm up in the sauna at Ascent Spa or book a signature massage for full restoration.

As night falls, the Tenaya Ice Rink comes alive under twinkling lights — an unforgettable experience included with your overnight stay. Glide across the ice surrounded by whispering pines and crisp mountain air, then warm up by the outdoor fire pits with s’mores and a beverage of your choice.
